Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in our first session?

What the first session is really designed to do is to allow you, the client, to effectively determine if you would feel comfortable having me help you to work on the issues affecting your life. It is of the utmost importance to find a therapist that you feel has the capacity to care about you and your problems on a meaningful level and also has the skills and abilities to help you to figure out your own solutions. When you come into my office for your first consultation, we will sit down for about 45-minutes and just have a conversation. The discussion will focus on what you feel are the primary problems that encouraged you to seek help. You will do most of the talking, although I will ask you some questions about your family, your daily activities, and your relationships in order to get a sense of what internal and environmental factors are having an impact on your mental well-being.

If you decide that you feel comfortable working with me, then in the last 10 or 15 minutes, we will create a plan of action that will help us to determine what your therapeutic goals are and what the criteria for meeting those goals will be. Finally, we will arrange another meeting to begin the work of getting you back on track with the ultimate goal of leading the happy, healthy life that all of us deserve.

Do I really need to speak to someone about my problems?

No, of course you don't. No one can make you talk about the issues concerning your life if you don't want to. However, numerous studies have shown that talking about your problems with someone who can help can be incredibly relieving and empowering. Putting your issues into words is the first step on the road to wellness. And if you decide that you don't like talking to other people about your problems, no one will ever make you come back. The vast majority of people find a tremendous sense of relief when they begin to share their problems with a professional while looking for solutions to get back on track.

How many sessions will I need?

This answer depends greatly on the problem you are coming in with. Some issues can be resolved in as little as 10 or 12 sessions. Some issues may need more sessions to resolve and some may need less. Usually, sessions last for 45 minutes and occur once per week or once every other week. We will find a schedule that works for you.

Do you take insurance?

I do take some forms of insurance. Call your insurance provider to find out if I am on their panel. If not, you can ask if they will reimburse you for out of network mental health help.

How do I know when it's time to get help?

There are some very good signs that you should be looking for some mental health help. One indicator is if your issues are interfering with your relationships, your work or your sleep schedule. Another good tip off is if you are feeling overpowered by your problems. Finally, if you answered YES to any of the questions on my home page, it may be a good idea to seek some outside help. The sooner you start looking, the sooner you can get back on track to living that happy, healthy life that we all want.
